Chicken feeder - 90 photos of the best projects. Schemes and drawings how to do it yourself

Those who breed poultry know that this is a great way to get additional income and natural nutrition. Someone keeps chickens to get eggs, someone for meat, in any case, the majority of the cost of maintenance falls on the feeding of animals. Therefore, the proper selection of a feeding system is very important for keeping chickens.

Choose the right one

Plants for feeding poultry are divided by source materials:

  • wooden devices are suitable for dry feed mixtures: cereals, animal feed, minerals, shells;
  • plastic feeders or iron ones are useful for using wet food, they are easy to clean and not soaked in food;
  • netting or rods will come in handy when feeding fresh grass.

You can also distinguish varieties by type of feed:

  • Trays are well suited as chicken feeders. These are peculiar containers with sides so that the feed does not spread out on the sides;
  • grooved with an additional limiter. Inside, it can be divided into compartments for different types of feed. They, as a rule, are taken outside the cells, to simplify maintenance;
  • hopper feeders mainly for dry mixes. They are intended for infrequent filling, so that the chickens can be left for some time. The feed remains clean and dry and is dosed.

You can position the device on the floor or hang it. The floor version is convenient if you need to move the feeder. The hinged container is attached to the walls inside or outside the cells.

General requirements

To save feed, the first thing you need to pay attention to is that the chickens themselves could not climb into the tank and scatter the feed. In addition, this is necessary for its preservation, so that excrement does not fall into it. You can protect the grain with bumpers, stops, or by moving the container itself out of the cage.

It is also necessary to remember that the container will have to be cleaned and filled daily, the design should not create obstacles to this. In general, you need to pay attention to the weight of the tank and its volume (it should be enough for a day of feeding the entire livestock).

About 15 centimeters are allocated per bird from the length of the feeder, which should be enough for everyone so that weaker individuals do not remain hungry. If the cage contains only chicks, this size can be reduced.

How to make feeders yourself

Now you can buy a variety of types of devices for feeding, however, the bird is quite enough and homemade options.

To make the feeders with your own hands will take quite a bit of time, but financially, the costs will decrease markedly. To create such containers, you can use improvised materials: buckets, pipes, bottles, plywood and much more. Next, consider the options.

Capacity made of plastic

Bottle feeders will be the most affordable option. If the container walls are tight and there is a side handle, then it is quite suitable. All you need to do is to make a hole about eight centimeters from the bottom so that the bird has access to food, and a slot is placed on the handle of the bottle to hang the bottle on a grid or grate.

Hopper feeder

Bunker or automatic feeders greatly simplify the process of bird care. Their principle is that the feed should be dosed, as the bird eats the previous one.You will need a bucket (wet mixes are usually sold in these) or, again, a large plastic water bottle and scaffold, or the bottom of another bucket (the main thing is that their diameter exceeds the size of the first bucket by no less than 10 centimeters).

At the bottom of the walls of the first bucket or bottle, holes are made for pouring food into the sections of the scaffold. Parts are mounted on self-tapping screws or wire.

Simply put, a smaller diameter container with holes at the bottom is placed in a pallet with sides. When the chickens eat up the food, a little more is added from the tank to the pallet.

Feeders collected from pipes

It will require PVC pipes of approximately 15 cm in diameter, plugs and a tee-splitter, the length is what it will be more convenient. Ten and twenty centimeter segments are separated from the pipe, a splitter to and plugs are attached to the long part. The short part is attached to the branch (this will be the tray). The design is suspended in a cage with a long edge up. It will always be possible to temporarily block access to feed.

You can arrange several such structures or modify the feeder for a large number of birds. Then the pipe must be cut into 2 parts, one of them is 30 cm, they are connected with a plastic elbow. In a short piece with a milling nozzle, two holes are poured on both sides (about 4 cm in diameter), through these places the bird will peck the food, the remaining edges are closed by a plug.

Wooden containers

This option is somewhat more expensive, for construction you will need:

  • plywood sheet
  • hinges for right angles
  • sandpaper
  • wood screws
  • jigsaw
  • roulette
  • drill and drill
  • clamps

Choose the size of the future device or use ready-made drawings. First, a sheet of plywood is drawn, then the individual parts are cut. Then, at the end of cutting the blanks, the necessary holes are made, including for countersunk screws.

All edges are cleaned with a sandpaper to prevent the birds from injuring themselves. Next, the sidewalls, the bottom and front of the structure are assembled. From the front, it will be appropriate to use a clear plastic plate to track the amount of feed remaining. On the front panel and the butt, a fifteen-degree angle is sawn from above and below, we fasten the parts and connect to the sidewall.

Above the feed point, a bar is fastened, sawed lengthwise at 30 degrees. The lid is screwed onto the hinges to access the feed. It is advisable to finish the construction with an antiseptic.

You can do it easier and build a feeder from the boards in the form of a long box, which is installed behind the cage. This allows you not to go into the chicken coop for feeding, the legs will remain clean.

A box of about 25 centimeters in height is built from the bars and sheathed with plywood or a board. The wall farthest from the birds is arranged with an inclination. The distances between the rods of the cages should be sufficient so that the bird can freely stick its head out and peck the food located outside.

The structure is covered with a lid made of wood or plywood with hinges to protect the food from water or other starving animals, such as mice. At the bottom of the tank, it is better to put a piece of linoleum, it will be easier to maintain a wooden feeder. In order to better understand the manufacturing process of such structures, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with the photos of chicken feeders.

The independent construction of such containers has many advantages compared to the purchase of off-the-shelf devices.

  • Firstly, there is nothing complicated in the process itself; this does not require any special skills or anyone else's help.
  • Secondly, serious financial savings, especially if you have at your disposal a serious number of birds.
  • Thirdly, the ideas of feeders can be gleaned from various sources and choose the most optimal for your convenience.

Any color, size, design can be selected, everything can be adjusted for you, without wasting time and effort in search of the optimal solution in stores. Having created the correct design with your own hands, you will not need to worry about the livestock during the day, you will always know that the bird has enough food and water and it is reliably protected.

Good feeding trough, I didn’t even know that such can be done! Bookmark it, very good ideas! We also did in our country house, but simpler. Making feeders fun and interesting, especially my grandchildren liked it.
